LOCAL POLICE PARTICIPATE IN MAYOR’S EXECUTION
Nuevo León attorney Alejandro Garza y Garza revealed that several local Santiago police officers participated in the kidnapping and execution of Edelmiro Cavazos Leal. The officers were working for Los Zetas.
Authorities reviewed the mayor’s home security camera footage and noticed inconsistencies with the bodyguard’s statement claiming he was thrown in the trunk when the criminals kidnapped Edelmiro. The recording showed the bodyguard getting into the car of his own free will. The only similarity to his story was that he had indeed been left unarmed on the national highway where motorists rescued him.
The bodyguard was identified as José Alberto Rodríguez Rodríguez, and when confronted, he confessed to his participation and disclosed the names of other police officers who had taken part in the action.
The Santiago police felt that their mayor was in the way because he always followed the law and prevented any type of abuse against the town’s residents. However, there had to be a stronger motive among the police force in order for them to commit such a vicious crime. And yes, there was one: Three weeks earlier, seven hundred pesos were deducted from several police officers’ biweekly paychecks.
It all began when Edelmiro scolded a group of officers for fining a group of tourists, for no apparent reason, that were practicing extreme sports in Sierra de Santiago. Some of the officers rudely exited the premises and left the mayor talking to himself. Cavazos Leal ordered, as a form a punishment, the deduction of 700 pesos from each of the officers’ paychecks, not for the lack of respect they had shown him, but rather for their abuse of power with the tourists.
The police went to their other boss, whom they did respect, a local Zetas leader nicknamed El Caballo, and complained about Edelmiro. They actually lied to the drug lord, stating that Cavazos Leal had come to an agreement with the Gulf Cartel and his elimination would now be necessary. That’s how the kidnapping and execution plan came to be—even though the police officers had lied and the mayor had made no such agreement with any criminal organization. The only thing that led them to commit this crime was their anger about the seven hundred pesos that had been deducted from their checks.
It seems that day after day, it is becoming more common for police officers to serve drug-trafficking gangs more loyally than the community to which they belong. And the result is that nobody wins, neither the residents nor the officers themselves, because corruption only leads to further corruption and, eventually, suffering and blood.
